Kafunta River Lodge/ Island Bush Camp

Kafunta Safaris is owned and run by Ron & Anke Cowan. We have made the South Luangwa National Park, Zambia our home for over 17 years and pride ourselves on our high attention to detail which ensures an unforgettable safari experience. We operate Kafunta River Lodge, a classic safari lodge, which is in an ideal location to discover the game rich Mfuwe area from the safety of the open safari vehicles or after dark to observe the nocturnal animals during the night drives and on foot for those joining our walking safaris. Kafunta Safaris also operate the seasonal Island Bush Camp. This is a small, personalised camp, located in a remote area in the very South of the National Park and a great place to explore the unspoilt wilderness on foot. Our qualified and experienced local guides accompany you throughout the safari.

The South Luangwa, Zambia is a great place to discover the untouched African wilderness, as it is truly one of Africa’s best hidden secrets. With over 50 different animal species, some of them unique to the Luangwa Valley like the Thornicroft giraffe and the Cookson wildebeest, and great opportunity to view leopards and lions as well as the highest density of hippos and crocodiles in the river; this is the safari destination not to be missed. But the Luangwa Valley offers much more then that …. it is a birdwatchers paradise with over 450 species of birds and the rich culture of the friendly Kunda tribe invites you to experience the traditional African life. For the more adventurous clients, we offer safaris to discover the whole of the Luangwa Valley, Zambia from the South Luangwa, to Luambe National Park, to the renowned and rarely visited North Luangwa National Park.

Island Bush Camp

This intimate, personalised camp lies under a grove of Mahogany trees in a very game-rich area of the southern section of the park. The Island Bush Camp offers rustic accommodation in grass/reed huts built on stilts that ensure safety from wild animals and provide an unlimited view of the Luangwa River, Zambia. The 5 chalets are equipped with the modern comforts of hot showers and running water. Each chalet has a private verandah overlooking the Luangwa River.

The Island Bush Camp is 2 hours drive south of Kafunta River Lodge in a very remote game-rich area of the southern section of the South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. In this complete solitude far away from other operators we offer exclusive walking safaris.

Island Bush Camp is seasonal and is open from 20 May to 1 November.

For the more adventurous wildlife enthusiast we offer safaris that cover the whole of the Luangwa Valley, Zambia including North Luangwa and Luambe National Parks. All our safaris are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles by our highly qualified and experienced safari guides.
